What is Medicare?

Different Parts of Medicare

Medicare is the Federal health insurance program for people who are age 65 and older, certain young people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease, sometimes called ESRD. Click on each section below for more information on each Medicare part.

Medicare Part A

Medicare HospitalMedicare Part A is the Hospital Insurance component of the federally administered Original Medicare program that provides coverage for inpatient hospital services. It helps cover:

  • Inpatient hospital stays Includes semi-private rooms, meals, general nursing, and medications during a hospital stay.
  • Skilled nursing facility care.
  • Covers short-term rehabilitation in a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying hospital stay.
  • Hospice care.
  • Provides end-of-life care for terminally ill patients.
  • Home health care
  • Limited coverage for medically necessary skilled nursing care or therapy services at home. This is sometimes called “premium-free Part A”.

people don’t have to pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. However, there may be deductibles and copayments for services

Medicare DoctorsMedicare Part B is the medical insurance portion of Medicare. It helps cover:

  • Doctor visits – Includes primary care and specialist visits.
  • Outpatient care – Covers services like X-rays, lab tests, and emergency room visits.
  • Preventive services –  Includes screenings, vaccines (like flu shots), and annual wellness visits.
  • Medical equipment – Covers wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen, and other durable medical equipment.
  • Mental health services – Includes therapy and counseling.
  • Some home health services
  • Limited coverage for medically necessary home care.

Costs of Medicare Part B:

  • Monthly premium – Most people pay a standard premium (which can vary based on income).
  • Deductible – There is a yearly deductible before Medicare starts covering costs.
  • Coinsurance – After meeting the deductible, Medicare usually covers 80% of approved services, and you pay 20%.

Affordable Health InsuranceMedicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and often provide additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers.

What Medicare Part C Covers:

  • Everything in Part A (hospital insurance)
  • Everything in Part B (medical insurance)
  • Additional benefits like vision, dental, hearing, and wellness programs
  • Prescription drug coverage (most plans include this)

Key Features of Medicare Advantage (Part C):

  • Lower out-of-pocket costs compared to Original Medicare, but with provider network restrictions.
  • HMO & PPO options – Some plans require you to see in-network doctors for full coverage.
  • Annual out-of-pocket limit – Unlike Original Medicare, Part C has a cap on costs. Plans can include: Dental, Vision, Gym Memberships, and Debit Cards for OTC items and groceries.

Prescription Medication bottlesMedicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It helps pay for the cost of prescription medications and is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Key Features of Medicare Part D:

  • Covers both generic and brand-name drugs (each plan has a list of covered drugs, called a formulary).
  • Available as a standalone plan (for those with Original Medicare) or included in some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.
  • Plans have different premiums, deductibles, and copays, so costs vary.

Medicare Part D Costs:

  • Monthly premium – Varies by plan and income (higher earners may pay more).
  • Annual deductible – Some plans require you to pay a certain amount before coverage starts.
  • Copayments or coinsurance – Costs you pay for medications after meeting the deductible.
  • Coverage Maximum out-of-pockets costs for 2025 is $2,000.

Seniors and MedicareA Medicare Supplement Plan, also called Medigap, is private insurance that helps cover out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare (Parts A & B), such as:

  • Deductibles (for hospital and medical services)
  • Copayments (for doctor visits and other services)
  • Coinsurance (the 20% you pay for Part B services)

Key Features of Medigap:

  • Works only with Original Medicare (not Medicare Advantage/Part C)
  • Covers some or all of your Medicare out-of-pocket costs, depending on the plan
  • No networks – You can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare
Guaranteed renewable – As long as you pay your premium, your coverage won’t be canceled
Does not cover prescription drugs (you need a separate Part D plan for that)

Costs of Medigap:

  • You pay a monthly premium (varies by plan and provider).
  • The premium increases each year on a Medicare Supplement plan.
